In 2017 a somewhat scandalous report was published by the University of Pennsylvania, finding that up to 70% of CBD products were mislabeled [1]. As recently as last year, follow-up reports have indicated that things aren’t much better.
“It is the role of federal agencies to ensure a safe and transparent consumer marketplace — but the C.B.D. market is currently the wild west,” Grocery Manufacturers Association president Geoff Freeman told Food Business News [2]. To this day CBD products are still poorly regulated, poorly marketed, and poorly produced.
Long story short, many CBD products can’t be trusted. In this wild west, much like the original one, consumers have mostly just been left to fend for themselves...
Things to look for in your next CBD product
There is one bad-product-repellant, however, education. Knowing what to look for in a CBD product can save you both time and money. It can also save your health!
Here’s a list of things to look for in any CBD product:
- 3rd party lab testing
- Lab tests available online
- “Clean” extraction methods
- Accurate labeling
- Pure carrier oils
If the product you’re looking at doesn’t have all these things, you may want to pass. And this is just the start — bonus points for brands that go the extra mile by getting special certifications (like the USDA organic or US Hemp Authority certification, for example). You can also tell a lot about a brand by their product reviews.
